The Horse Wisdom Program is a psycho-educational offering that blends traditional psychotherapy and personal development with equine-assisted activities. Developed by the Equine Psychotherapy Institute, this unique program consists of 7 sessions and is designed for children aged 12+, young people, and adults.
Here are the key topics covered in the program:
- Regulation and the Calm State: Participants learn how horses return to a calm state by expressing their feelings, yawning, taking an out breath, eating, relaxing their bodies, being near friends, running, and rolling. This session explores what calms us as well.
- Awareness: Horses, as prey animals, use their awareness to stay safe. In this session, participants learn to notice what’s happening in their environment, inside their bodies, and in their sensations, feelings, and thoughts. Being aware allows them to respond rather than react.
- Boundaries: Boundaries are our “yes” and “no”—what feels okay and what doesn’t. Horses model healthy boundaries through body language. Participants explore ways to set boundaries for themselves and others, including using voice, touch, and personal space.
- Feelings: Understanding emotions is essential. Horses experience emotions like joy, fear, anger, and sadness. They feel, express, and let go of their emotions. Participants delve into their own feelings during this session.
- Healthy Relationships: Horses reflect safe, healthy relationships. Building and maintaining healthy relationships require trust, respect, communication, support, common interests, and healthy boundaries.
- Thinking: Our thoughts impact our feelings and behaviours. Horses notice our energy, body language, and feelings. In this session, participants explore ways to offer themselves kind and helpful self-talk and thoughts.
- Facing Life’s Challenges: Participants reflect on the previous six sessions and recall moments when they’ve used techniques learned from the program. These include using their out breath, awareness, expressing boundaries, managing feelings, offering kind thoughts, and creating safe relationships.
- Reflection
The program aims to enhance important developmental areas, promote calmness, awareness, boundaries, positive thinking, healthy relationships, emotional expression, and resilience.
